London Wormery

Image: Original Organics

This project will install a Wormery in Barking and Dagenham which accepts organic matter from business and local government. The facility processes this organic matter into fertile soil using non-toxic and natural methods – worms (opens an external BBC ‘project at home’ link).

Worms increase the concentration of the organic matter and minerals through their digestive system and the end product is a more fertile soil, with improved structure and drainage (Study: Microbial and Animal Effects on Soil Fertility).

The Wormery takes delivery of organic matter or landfill overflows to produce our range of ethical fertile soil with a minimum impact on the environment – and we will test this product on market stalls once we produce a viable quantity and product.

There is also a learning and development element to this programme – the Wormery will receive visits from students and enthusiasts to demonstrate and promote the benefits of natural horticultural practices.

In the meantime, we are actively seeking a larger site for this project and welcome Barking & Dagenham residents’ input or suggestions for a site.
